Hi, I’m Val Stricklin.

I’m an artist, a crafter, and a designer.

My home studio is in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, overlooking the Roanoke Valley.

 I’m a skywatcher.

Here in the sunrise studio, it’s all about color and light. With Blue Ridge Mountain views like this to inspire me, I paint, stitch, design, create and grow my way through life’s experiences.

I’m currently enjoying surface pattern design, floral paintings, quilting, and tiny art.

Music, dance and gardening are strong influences in my patterns and images. My own original photographs are vital to my work.

I believe making art is for anyone who wishes to make art. I think it’s fun to make art together.

I grew up making things. My mom taught me to sew when I was young, and even as a child I would become hyper-focused on projects, working intensely on sculptures made of quilled paper or drafting clothing patterns for dolls, or experimenting with ways to embroider eyes. I often spent my allowance on art supplies. I was lucky to have a spectacular art teacher who incorporated a wide variety of arts into her curriculum. How many 5th graders get to experiment with batik and linoleum block printing in public school? I did, and I’m grateful. There was always lots to learn and observe in our small town in Nebraska.

I spent 20 years working as a nurse, always making things along the way. I’ve participated in the healing power of art in many environments, including hospitals, clinics, schools, museums and community venues like the Children’s Healing Art Project (CHAP) Art Factory.

Have a look through my portfolio and shop and see what speaks to you.

Check back often to see what else bubbles to my surface. I love exploring diverse techniques.

My pattern designs are available for licensing.
